CHAPEL HILL, NC — Posted Oct. 11, 2008
On Sunday, October 19, 2008, eight UNC music majors will sing familiar opera arias accompanied by the Chapel Hill Philharmonia. The concert will be the first joint endeavor featuring collegiate soloists and the orchestra, providing listeners the opportunity to hear old favorites sung by young potential stars of the future.
Jay Dolan, baritone, and sopranos Cat Park and Kathleen Sharpe, students of Terry Rhodes, will sing selections from Rossini's "The Barber of Seville" and Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro" and "Don Giovanni". Zachary Ballard, baritone, and Sarah Dempsy, soprano, who study with Dr. Valentin Lanzrien, will sing arias from Donizetti's "Don Pasquale" and Mozart's "La Clamenza di Tito". Students of Dr. Jeanne Fischer, Claire Fitzgerald, soprano, and JoAna Rusche, mezzo-soprano, will perform arias from Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro" and Cosi Fan Tutti". Lydia Rusche, soprano, UNC-Greensboro student of Clare O'Brien, will sing a selection from Puccini's "Gianni Schicchi". Most of the featured soloists have won singing awards and several have participated in opera workshops in Italy.
Leading off the feast of Italian arias will be the overture from Verdi's "La Forza del Destino'. The Chapel Hill Philharmonia will conclude with Tschaikovsky's "Capriccio Italien".
The concert is at 3:00 pm in newly remodeled Hill Hall Auditorium on the UNC-CH campus. Admission is free. A reception will follow.
