CHAPEL HILL, NC — Posted Dec. 11, 2008
On Sunday, December 14, 2008 the Chapel Hill Philharmonia will present a concert with guest soloist Kurt Kellan playing Mozart's Horn Concerto No. 3. The French horn is known for its wonderful mellow, warm and haunting sound over its four octaves, the widest range of all brass instruments.
Mr. Kellan, currently associate professor of music at the University of Victoria, BC., was Principal Horn of the Calgary Philharmonic for over twenty years. A student of famed hornist Philip Farkas, he has performed with numerous ballet and symphony orchestras in the United States and Canada. He has frequently been a soloist with the CBC. (Note:though the horn was originally played on horseback for fox hunts, Mr. Kellan will be standing on stage).
Leading off the concert will be Beethoven's Egmont Overture, with a rousing horn fanfare played by the five horn players of the orchestra. The well-known New World Symphony of Dvorak, highlighting all the brass of of the orchestra, will conclude the program.
The Chapel Hill Philharmonia, under the direction of Don Oehler, is a community orchestra for serious amateur players from the Triangle Region who play for the love of classical music. The concert is at 7:30 pm in the newly remodeld, handicapped-accessible Hill Hall Auditorium at UNC-CH. Admission is free.
