Youth Winner and Guest Conductor Featured in Chapel Hill Philharmonia Concert

CHAPEL HILL, NC — Posted Apr. 4, 2010

On Sunday, May 2, 2010 the Chapel Hill Philharmonia “Fanfares and Dances” concert will feature pianist Cissy Yu, winner of the Young Artist Concerto Competition. She will play the first movement of Mendelssohn’s Piano Concerto no. 1. Cissy, 15, a freshman at East Chapel Hill High, studies with UNC faculty member Wonmin Kim. Playing since age 4, Cissy won the US Open Music Competition in California in 2005 and recently attended the Schlern International Music Festival in Italy. She also excels academically and enjoys playing violin in her high school orchestra.

Guest conductor Yoram Youngerman, violist and violinist, has performed worldwide, from Lincoln Center in New York to Canada, Europe and Israel. He was a member of the international award-winning Amernet String Quartet. Now teaching at UNC-CH, he recently founded and directs the Mallarme Youth Chamber Orchestra.

The program includes Copland’s popular brass-and-percussion Fanfare for the Common Man and Beethoven’s beautiful and energetic Symphony no. 7. The string section solos in Respighi’s Suite no. 3 from Ancient Airs and Dances, known for its “shimmer on the ears.”

The Chapel Hill Philharmonia is a community orchestra of serious amateur musicians who play for the love of classical music. The concert is at 7:30 pm in Hill Hall Auditorium on the UNC-CH campus. Admission is free.
