Beloved opera songs will resound in Hill Hall on Sunday, February 19 when 17 UNC award-winning voice students join in performance with the Chapel Hill Philharmonia. Soprano Caroline Mason will sing “Les Oiseaux dans la Charmille” (The Doll’s Song) from Offenbach’s “Les Contes d’Hoffmann.” Fellow soprano Maria Palombo will perform “O mio Babbino Caro” from “Gianni Schicchi” by Puccini. Mozart’s amazing “Der Holle Rache” from “Die Zauberflote” will be sung by soprano Jessica Hiltabidle, portraying the Queen of the Night.
Mozart’s music is well represented by duets from three other operas. Noelle Harb, soprano, and Chris Nickell, tenor, will sing “Fra gli amplessi” from “Cosi fan tutte.” Sopranos Emily Siar and Kayla Hill perform “Sull’aria” from “Le Nozze di Figaro.” Excerpts from “Don Giovanni” include “La ci darem la mano” sung by Kristen Barney, soprano, and Ben Boecker, baritone, and “O Statua Gentilissa” featuring baritones Dan Silva and Taylor Weddle. The trio of sopranos Joanna Burke and Pam Revak plus baritone Ben Boecker will sing “Soave Sia il Vento” from “Cosi fan tutte.”
The lovely “Vien Mallika...Dome epais” (Flower Duet) from Delibes’ “Lakme” will be sung by soprano Sarah Humphrey and mezzo-soprano Laura Buff. Puccini’s stirring “O Soave Fanciulla” from “La boheme” is peformed by soprano Lydia Rusche and tenor Ryan Griffin. Concluding the vocal selections will be Verdi’s “Brinidisi” from “La Traviata” with the duo of Ryan Griffin and Carolina Mason joined by the chorus of all the vocalists.
The Chapel Hill Philharmonia will lead off the program with selections from Bizet’s “Carmen Suite #1,” conducted by Donald Oehler and student guest conductor Vincent Povazsay. The orchestra will end the afternoon with Wagner’s rousing “Prelude to Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg.”
The concert is at 3:00 pm in Hill Hall Auditorium on the the UNC-CH campus. Admission is free. A reception will follow.
